The Medical Cost Reduction Program:
Improving the Bottom Line Through Stress Reduction
High stress levels are rampant in our fast-paced society. Mergers, downsizing, and rapid growth, as well as the incredible rate of change seen in the information age, lead to feelings of distress and burnout in many workers. Medical problems follow: researchers estimate that approximately 80% of all disease is stress-related; when stress increases, illness and pain increase. In addition, distracted workers have more accidents and mishaps than their calmer colleagues.
In addition to the personal toll taken on peoples' lives, costs add up quickly. Use of sick leave, increased insurance premiums, direct health care costs for self-insured companies, worker compensation costs, and employee turnover are expensive to any company. The cost of intangibles such as poor morale, are incalculable. The bottom line is that lost productivity due to stress is estimated to cost American businesses 150 billion dollars annually.
The Stress Reduction & Relaxation Program
Started in 1979 by Dr. Jon Kabit-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, The Stress Reduction & Relaxation Program teaches individuals to become more self aware, and improve focus and concentration, through a series of mental and physical exercises.
The program consists of eight two-hour sessions, plus a one-day long retreat. Thousands of patients, with all kinds of medical and psychological problems, have participated in the program. The Stress Reduction & Relaxation Program was featured in the Bill Moyers series, Healing and the Mind.
It makes sense, doesn't it?
If you teach people to focus, concentrate, and stay calm, doesn't it make sense that they'll be more productive and less stressed out? If you teach people a low impact, enjoyable stretching and strengthening program, doesn't it make sense that they'll be healthier?
Where does this program fit into your company?
The Stress Reduction & Relaxation Program can stand on it's own, or it can be a supplement to existing Employee Assistance Programs, Wellness Programs, and Stress Management Programs. You can refer individuals to our clinic, or create a program that can be run at your facility.
